Welcome to the Mount Diablo Astronomical Society
M.D.A.S. was formed in 1957 as part of the National "Moonwatch" program established to time the first man-made satellites so accurate orbits could be calculated.
Within months of the club's formation, astronomy and space science made a giant leap into the households and classrooms of Americans with the launching of Sputnik, and soon afterwards Explorer I. The space race was on, kindling a desire in many to understand more about space and astronomy, and what the newly formed NASA was planning. We hold monthly meetings in Concord, CA, as well as Public and Society Astronomy Programs on Mt. Diablo.
MDAS provides astronomy outreach to the public free of
charge at one of the premier viewing locations in the San Francisco Bay
Area, Mount Diablo State Park.
Our monthly (March to October) star parties feature many
telescopes and binoculars provided and operated by our members for your
education and enjoyment. We
also provide outreach events for organizations located in the San
Francisco East Bay cities of Alamo, Antioch, Concord, Clayton, Danville,
Dublin, Lafayette, Moraga, Orinda, Pleasant Hill, Pleasanton, and Walnut
Creek, as well as unincorporated areas of Alameda and Contra Costa
Counties. Our members are
associated with and have also done outreach with the Espace Academy,
other museums, such as Chabot Space and Science Center, Lawrence Hall of
Science, and some of great community programs with MDIA, MDOA, East Bay
Parks, Muir Heritage Society, Livermore Unit of the National Association
of Rocketry (LUNAR), Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, Venture Scouts, Cub
Scouts. Elementary School, Middle School, High School, and College.
We have monthly meetings at the
Concord Police Academy with speakers on topics covering space science,
astronomy, historical astronomy, space astronomy, telescopes and night
sky viewing, Our speakers
are from some of the local universities and colleges , Lawrence
Livermore Laboratories, NASA, and other public organizations and private
